What Is Supplemental Health Insurance?

Supplemental insurance is one of the most popular products that we administer for members. But what is it, exactly?

Supplemental insurance is valuable because it's flexible. Members can pick and choose the right level of coverage for them and their situation. Supplemental insurance plans cover things beyond a member’s Essential Medical plan. Depending on what is chosen, supplemental insurance plans can pay for certain costs not covered by an Employer's health plan or a Major Medical plan. This may include expenses that would otherwise be out-of-pocket due to high deductibles or co-pays.

Supplemental Insurance plans administered through Strata Health Solutions are flexible and can provide coverage if you:

  • Are in-between jobs or under-employed
  • Travel out-of-network often
  • Need peace of mind to protect you against costs related to accidents or a critical illness, like cancer, heart attack or stroke
  • Have a high-deductible Health Insurance plan
  • Don't have access to dental insurance or vision insurance through your employer

These plans are designed to be a supplement to in-force Health Insurance. They do not take the place of Minimum Essential Coverage. Because of that, they do not fulfill minimum Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements.

Instead, these plans help protect the insured against:

  • The financial impact of a major illness or injury
  • Loss of income if temporarily or permanently unable to work due to an accident or illness
  • Healthcare costs before meeting an insurance deductible
  • Healthcare costs while traveling out-of-network

What's The Difference Between Supplemental And Short-Term Health Insurance?

Short-Term Health Insurance is often confused with Supplemental Insurance, but it's very different.

Think of Supplemental Insurance as "in addition to" your regular Health Insurance plan. Supplemental Insurance doesn't provide the Essential Coverage you need. Instead, it adds to your Essential Coverage. You can have Insurance through your Employer and have Supplemental Insurance in addition to your Employer’s Health Plan.

Short-Term Health Insurance, on the other hand, is used in place of traditional Major Medical Insurance, but for a temporary period of time. You typically use these plans when you don't have any Health Insurance coverage. You may need Short-Term Health Insurance if:

  • You're in-between jobs or unemployed
  • You travel outside of your network coverage area for an extended period of time
  • Your situation has recently changed, due to a non-qualifying life event, that has you left without Health Insurance

These plans typically cover you for anywhere between 90 days – 364 days, depending on your resident state and the plan offering, at varying levels of coverage. You can also add Supplemental Insurance on top of Short-Term Health Insurance for greater peace of mind. At Strata Health Solutions, we administer both Supplemental and Short-Term Health Insurance options.

Do I Need to Get Supplemental Health Insurance?

Each person makes their own healthcare decisions. It's deeply personal, reflecting your known risk factors and situation. It also depends on the amount of protection you need or want.

Large families who live on a single income will need help if the worst happens. Likewise, if you're an individual who is striking out on a new career path, a Supplemental Health Insurance plan can give you the peace of mind to make it happen.

When Should I Get Supplemental Health Insurance?

If you're thinking about Supplemental Insurance, ask yourself a few questions to see if it makes sense for you right now: Will any of your children need braces in the next few years? Are you planning on having a child? Are you retiring or moving to part-time or contract work? Are there certain health issues your current insurance doesn’t cover? Is there a history of critical illness in your family? In all of these cases, will your insurance cover the added costs?

All of these questions can help you think more deeply about your true healthcare needs. For many, Supplemental Insurance provides peace of mind. You can't predict the future, but you can prepare for it.

What Types Of Supplemental Insurance Are Available?

The biggest benefit of Supplemental Insurance is that it's flexible for you and your family. Unlike traditional Health Insurance where you may have only two to three options to choose from, Supplemental Insurance allows you to pick and choose what you need from a long list of benefits.

The major types of Supplemental Insurance we administer include:

  • Dental and Vision plans
  • Critical Illness plans
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment
  • Accident-Only Medical Expense plans
  • Prescription Drug plans
  • Accidental Death Benefit plans

These aren't your only options when it comes to supplemental insurance. You can also choose the amount of coverage you want. You can choose how you receive your benefits. Some plans provide one-time fixed cash benefits after a covered illness or injury. Others provide daily, weekly, or monthly payouts during a hospital stay.
